<VV> Dual Petronics!!! Ultimate in reliability? ( flight engine facts)

Not street Corvair but interesting:
William Wynne, the flyCorvair.com guy has been building and selling flight
dual point distributors for many years. There are most likely over 100
flying today, I don't know the numbers. Each set of points fire a separate
coil. He utilizes a coil switcher to select which set of points & coil are
the "active" set; full redundancy. Lately, he has replaced one of the sets
of points with an electronic set. He says in his website that he maintains
the points in his EP setup (Electronic & points) as a backup in case the
electronics fail. The points may be put on line at any time with the flick
of the ignition selector switch and are part of each preflight run-up. As a
side note, the selector switch also turns on an emergency fuel pump. He says
that is because when the engine sputters, you don't have to think "Fuel or
ignition?" These distrubutors are designed to make the flight engine
reliable and fault tolerant; necessary for flight.

For more information see his site:

There are high performance dual point distributors for street & track. I
understand that both points are used together to obtain a better spark. But
what would be the advantage of dual Electronics? Isn't that what the
electronics are designed to do; give a better more reliable high performance
spark? Why would you need two on the street? Do Corvair Distributors fail
that often?
