Please allow me to clarify.  The burning of the eyes is caused by  
fumes from the exhaust, not in the engine compartment.  I can, and  
have, run the heater (have the fresh air hose blocked off) in a  
closed cabin with no ill effects or the CO alarm going off.  There  
are no visible fuel leaks anywhere in the lines (BTW, I have an  
electric fuel pump).
