Ed - On many electronic ignition systems, removing the plug wire and  holding 
it a distance from ground (depending on the distance) will allow - even  
encourage - the spark from the rotor to find a better ground that that  of the 
plug end of the detached wire. The spark may jump from the  rotor to a part of 
the electronics that lives inside the cap. ZAP! and  death (of the electronics) 
occurs. I will never perform that test without  attaching the plug wire to a 
spare spark plug and laying the plug on a good  ground. That will give you a 
good visual indication without risking the  in-the-cap electronics. - Seth
