these days the habits for testing high tension side of coils for spark  
should include using a test plug , either a stock plug carefully grounded or go  
buy a test plug at your friendly auto parts store. it is a large gap , but not  
too large , and has an alligator clip mounted on the side of the plug. this  
problem destroyed a lot of hei and other ignition systems in the early days of  
"electronic".  yes , there are more ideas out there but this one works  
safely!
