The 61 shop manual recommends you check the 
Powerglide transmission fluid periodically (1,000 
miles) ; the same check interval as the 
differential fluid.  Transmission fluid is 
checked with the transmission fluid warm, shift 
lever in neutral and the emergency brake fully engaged.
