According to the "Servicing the Corvair PG Transmission" filmstrip you
should have the fluid at normal operating temperature and shift it into
all gears for a bit and then check in neutral.

Wonder if the 1,000 miles goes to when there was Service Stations...
Never see anyone raise the hood at the pump anymore...

The 61 shop manual recommends you check the 

Powerglide transmission fluid periodically (1,000 

miles) ; the same check interval as the 

differential fluid.  Transmission fluid is 

checked with the transmission fluid warm, shift 

lever in neutral and the emergency brake fully engaged.
