You Pretty much got it right Tony!  I would just add
that there is more lubricating going on with just the
main shaft turning off the pinnion shaft while towing.
 The two sychro hubs that are splined to the main
shaft, with there respective 1-2, 3-4 shift collars
and reverse spur gear are slinging oil more than we
would think, and there is rotational movement of the
idler gears along with the cluster gear in neutral,
due to the static enter-action of the respective gear
cones and brass blockers. Not at the speed of the main
shaft, but variable speeds. How do I know this!  Many
years ago, about 37 to be exact.  I spun a early and
late 4-speed with a 500 rpm drill and plexiglass cover
on in place of the regular side covers and fluid level
1 inch below fill level  There's a lot more fluid
movement than one would expect.  You can take this to
the bank!  Bernie
