Ernie, Do the Flowmasters exit to the side or
straight back? Are
 they
attached to the engine/engine shrouding directly or to
the body?

Exhausts that exit straight back will be sucked back
into the engine
compartment and then the heater due to the Kamm effect
at the squared
 off back of
the car. That's why all stock Corvairs had exhausts
that exit at the
  side.

If the new exhaust system isn't attached to the engine
or engine
 shrouding
securely it will be stressed every time the drivetrain
twists--usually
 damaging
the exhaust packings (both the six stack packings at
the exhaust
 manifolds
(logs) and the exhaust pipe packings. So a tight
system will loosen
 and
start to leak very quickly if not installed securely
and correctly.

Bob Hall: Some very good points. Yes, my
flowmasters exit out the BACK of the car! I never
thought about the vacumn effect. I've seen other
Corvairs with rear exhausts. I wonder how they get
around this problem. I ordered the donuts but if you
theory is correct, this will not help. Ernie
