Dave asked:

I did drive it to the store & back one night. All the dash lights
were very dim. I adjusted the dimmer switch but it was all the way up. The
dimmer control adjusts from dim to off. I just couldn't get any brightness.
All other lights worked fine. The previous owner installed a complete new
bumper to bumper wiring harness (great craftsmanship). Everything else
works flawlessly. I won't troubleshoot the problem until I finish the engine
and get her back on the road. <unsnip>

Craig replies;
I wonder if the PO relamped the instrument cluster? Old bulbs develop a
silvery sheen inside the bulb and that blocks the light. If he did relamp,
perhaps he used the wrong bulbs. Bulbs come in 1cp, 2cp, and in some cases
3cp. I'd take a look at the bulbs before I went much deeper into
troubleshooting. If the bulbs check out, the next thing to consider would be
the headlight switch - though the normal failure is to OFF/Bright (loss of
variability) it could be that it's not making contact at full bright.
