My experience with A.I.R. (smog pump) Corvairs is the same as Jeff's.   A 
crackling, marbles sound was "normal" under light to moderate acceleration if  I 
had any vacuum leakage from the smog equipment or vacuum hoses.  This was  
with smog heads and raised head smog pistons.
