I've done that and it works well.  Our old house was small so space was at a premium.  I cut the plaster and lath off a 4 foot wide section of my daughter's bedroom wall.  Trimmed it out to match the rest of the room and had an almost instant built in bookcase, deep enough for paperback books.  The same idea would be great for spray cans.  Not as much fun as hitting them with darts but...
