When I was a student at National Tech in LA, 1960 I was taught the reason
to polarize was to insure the N stays N and the S stayed S . The residual
magnetism is so small that iron filings pored onto the field would not be
attracted . The only way the poles become reversed is by accident! Battery
in backwards? or in the rebuilding process or testing,In the many years I
was in the field, I only had to polarize once. and regulators . Never!!

So what UNPOLARIZES the generator? I generally polarize if I install or
reinstall a generator, but when do you HAVE to do it? Every time you
disconnect the cables (I would think not)?
