I did the same thing ONCE on a LM with AC.  I blocked the  compressor up 
high precariously supported on 2x4 blocks.  But from  then on, on other cars, 
I disconnected it and removed it completely  from the engine compartment.  
As stated by others, be careful of your face  and eyes (use goggles) when 
disconnecting the hoses and plug and tape the hoses  to keep all the summer 
humidity out even if you plan on replacing everything on  the AC system later.  
And keep every little clip, screw and clamp for  reuse.
