If all you need is making room to work easily on the engine, why not
removing the compressor from it's base without dissconnecting hoses ? Didn't
work on Corvairs AC but, on machines with hidraulic pumps or motors where, if
needing room for other tasks, I remove the pump or motor from it's support
and move it appart. Most hoses have enough flexibility to do this.

I did the same thing ONCE on a LM with AC. I blocked the compressor up
high precariously supported on 2x4 blocks. But from then on, on other cars,
I disconnected it and removed it completely from the engine compartment.
As stated by others, be careful of your face and eyes (use goggles) when
disconnecting the hoses and plug and tape the hoses to keep all the summer
humidity out even if you plan on replacing everything on the AC system later.
And keep every little clip, screw and clamp for reuse.
