<VV> Water Injection for L62 110 hp

Bill,
Yes, a "few" decades ago, I had a well-worn 110 engine in my 67 Monza that wanted to ping extensively every time the car was accelerated. Not wanting to retard the timing below the normal stock setting, I decided to experiment and setup a "home-built" water injection system. This consisted of a surplus high pressure pump (at least 50 psi) and 2 plastic nozzles I "borrowed" off a couple of my wife's kitchen cleaner spray bottles. They were just about empty anyway (at least that's what I told her<GGGG>) I drilled holes in the tops of the air flow ducting over each carb and installed the nozzles upside down so the water would spray downward into the carbs. I used a simple pushbutton on the bottom of the dash for me to start the injection BEFORE I started to accelerate. If I remembered to do so, all was quiet in the back. If I forgot, the sound was of a bunch of empty beer bottles rattling around. I had to add a filter and use distilled water (actually filtered dehumidifier water) to keep the nozzles from clogging. But the system proved the validity of water injection even for non-boosted operation.
If you read my article on Corvair Turbocharging Improvements in. a recent issue of the CORSA Communique, you'll see a number of references for various units that will turn on the injection automatically. Many of these systems can also be used on non-boosted systems to operate as soon as the manifold vacuum drops below a certain amount signifying the beginning of acceleration..

Hi all. I've read articles on Turbocharged Corvairs where water injection helped keep the engine cool, prevent pinging, and smooth out acceleration.

My question is, has anyone tried water injection on a non-turbo Corvair? I'd like to advance my timing a bit, cause I get MUCH better performance, but of course pinging, even with octane booster. I've retarded the timing back to close to stock settings, but it would be nice to have a way to improve performance and keep the enging running cooler at the same time.

If you've seen or tried it, how did you hook up the system?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks...Bill Hershkowitz 69 Monza 110 PG
