Jim,
When I build suspensions off the car I have a long threaded rod that I run 
up thru the crossmember.  I put a large washer and nut on the top where the 
shock top cpmes thru.  I then have a piece of wood across the bottom of the 
lower control arm.  I just turn the not on the end and it pulls the unit 
together.  Remember to make sure that you have the proper alignment of the 
coil spring on the lower arm.
