<VV> Springs and spring rates

I once ordered a full set of springs for my '68 coupe from Clarks.  While I did manage to squeeze the MUCH taller new springs in to the front, when I let the weight of the car back down onto it's wheels, the suspension did not move at all- it stayed topped out!  Even with just one spring changed!

The rear springs were so much taller than the originals that I could not get them into position in order to even give them a try.  Fortunately they let me return them, without a restocking charge.  I'm sure I ate the shipping though...

I now have much less $$ available than I did then, so my next attempt at taking the sag out of my car will be to use those rubber coil spring spacers that are available through JC Whitney.  Cheesy, I know, but it's a relatively cheep experiment...

After reading all the comments on rear springs, I have to add one more note to the discussion.

Unless you can actually measure spring rate, you have NO IDEA what you really have. This goes for old tired used springs and those brand new ones you buy from any of the vendors.

One time, three members of Bayshore each bought new springs for their Corvairs. We each had purchased Clark's heavy duty springs both front and rear for our cars.

After installation, all three cars sat at different ride heights. We all used what we thought was the exact same thing, all the part number were correct for our late model applications, but all three cars sat at different ride heights.

Not all springs are equal, some are more equal than others.
