JR is absolutely correct...did the same thing once on a cold night drive
from Ice racing up in Wisconsin, I live 60 miles south of Chicago.....

I had bought a cigarette plug in heater/defroster to help my rusty vert stay
warn and defrosted and was running it for and extended period of time...

I smelt "the Hot" smell and went to unplug the heater, when the wire pulled
out of the heater plug.  The remaining metal parts of the heater plug were
stuck in the lighter port and started sparking, glowing, and smoking as all
the wires started burning of the insulation.

It's amazing how fast you can find a drive to turn in and throw open the
door and get your head under the dash to disconnect the cigarette lighter...

Car was fine and drove the next couple hour's home without an issue.

I added an inline fuse when I rewired the lighter....I don't smoke but use a
radar detector and phone charger....needed that cigarette ligher...
