The Porsche info cited below is not correct in linage. The 550 was a
mid-engine race car. It was followed, beginning in about 1958, by the 718
family of cars known as the RSK, RS-60 and RS61. The pre-911 Porsche street
car was the 356 (aka: Bathtub Porsche), produced from about 1951 to 1965.
It was followed by the 911. The 911 was originally called the 901, and was
introduced at the 1963 Frankfort Auto show, with production deliveries
beginning in 1964. Peugeot objected to the 901 name since it had a trademark
on zero filled numbers beginning with the number 9. So Porsche changed it to
911. These "Puke-joes" were a series of "family cars". Thus I have avoided
using the dreaded terms sedan and coupe for required Corvair content. VBG!!

The date for the Porsche 911 Turbo of 1974 is correct.

Saying Porsche had some racing success with the 550 is a classic example of
understatement.

In a same model year EM Turbo vs 911 race, I supose the question is what
kind of a race. If it is a road race, I'd bet on the 911. The EM has barn
door aerodynamics and would run out of brakes very quickly. The EM turbo
would also probably puke the motor under sustained boost. Great for drag
racing, not so good at road racing.

I don't know - nor do I care - what the 0-60 or 1/4 mile time/speeds of
either car were back in the day. Comparing them is apples and oranges. But
I'm sure somebody will. Both great cars, but for different purposes.

Story: The very first time I say a EM turbo run was against a 409
southbound on Woodward Ave off the light at Coolidge road in Royal Oak MI.
The 409 won when they got to 3 gear. Before that, it was door hand to door
handle. How about that, double Corvair content! WOW!!

.In 1964 after some success in motor racing, namely with the 550 Spyder, the
company launched the Porsche 911. . . .

They may not have turbocharged it until 74.

hmmm...Charles are you sure about 911?

the first 911 turbo-charged was produced in 1974 (12 years after the
first spyder option)

and up until 1964, there was no such thing as 911 :)
