 And, aren't 64 barrels fairly rare? Why not save them for original engines, and use 65-69 barrels on late heads?

Using a hose clamp as a spacer will fit and center the late heads on the 
64 barrels, and a late gasket will improve the odds of getting the 
gasket centered, BUT,  yeah, ain't it always the butts to deal with this 
stuff -- it does nothing for solving the issue that caused all this -- 
the bigger hole in the late heads and the late barrels accommodate a 
wider sealing surface for the head gasket -- bigger surface area, more 
heat transfer, fewer head gasket failures.  One of the late model things 
that actually is an improvement over the early style.
