Interesting thing. 10 or so years ago, one of our mismanaged salt mines 
collapsed destroying roads, farms, and much property above.
Of course, the taxpayers ended up paying for that........................


No, They didn't!  ALL subsurface mining companies via a Federally mandated
"separation tax" (managed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration-MSHA)
PAY into a massive ground subsidence restoration fund on a "per ton" basis.
A "subsidence event" costs the taxpayers NOTHING!  Individual losses are
covered under another Federally mandated, industry-funded subsidence
insurance program similar to Federal flood insurance.
