Pete and all
  I worked for Caterpillar Tracter Co. ( Aurora Illinois ) and all 
Management was required the wear tie's and white shirts, in the 80's they changed 
the rules that colored shirts could be worn. Then in some departments no tie's 
required. For most of my time in Management I worked in the Heat Treat 
Department and my Boss required a tie be worn at all times, the mean temp in 
that area is 105 to 110 Deg. F. so I was glad when he retired and the rule went 
away.
   In my retirement I wear ties for Weddings and Funerals and some special 
events !!
