A couple thoughts:

- There is loose and there is loose.  If the belt is just loose enough  
to live, it really shouldn't have any trouble driving the fan, what  
with 180 degrees of belt wrap.  I suppose we could use some sort of  
tach to measure and find out, but when the engine is warmed up that  
belt sure seems to have plenty of grip.

- A belt that stays on is much better at cooling the engine than one  
that has flipped over and comes off shifting into third at full  
throttle, or worse yet breaks internally so it kind of stays on but  
really can't transmit any power.

It's not about belt life, it's really about engine life.
