you MAY luck out and be able to repair that latch by holding the button  in 
while moving the latch gear wheel with a small screwdriver. it can 
sometimes  get out of time if not closed firmly.  then lube it. i use a cosmoline  
compound in a spray can called "fluid film" for stuff like that and door  
hinges.  a toot inside the doors and other areas that rust can be a good  
preventative also. it migrates a lot ,so not much needed.
