 Now you've just sealed the argument for an LSx engine. LS1s START at 320 HP... Out of the box!

Especially if you add a turbo!  The Jetfire used a turbo on the 215 Olds engine 
in 1962-63.  I remember seeing a 215 in a Corvair at Lime Rock many years ago.  
It fit quite well with just a small notch in the frame rail.

Seeing as how 'Vair owners are somewhat tightfisted, the 215  can be had 
for much less than the LS series and might not have too much loss in   
performance.l
