Commercial window washers have used steel wool in urban skyscrapers for a century or more. Wiping windex with newspaper in and out works excellent, especially in smoker cars. Lastly, right after a car wash spray windex on the left over water droplets then chamois the surface. This eliminates the 'wax jobs'.  Used car lots do this all the time
