Several decades ago I had a rotted 65 Corsa convertible that I had to scrap
and cut up, only the drive train was worth saving. There was what looked
like a galvanized angle iron reinforcement inside one of the box rails in
the engine compartment that had the full number if I remember correctly.
Also knew someone who had a 64 Impala stolen and he said after a year got a
call from police who had located it. It was repainted a different color and
had a spot on the floor where they had cut it open to see the number then
brazed it back in place. Every car since then has numbers stamped or marked
in several places, some readily visible, some hidden. I'm not sure what year
that practice was started. Police have info on location of the numbers on
the various vehicles.
