LS CORVAIR PARTS NEWSLETTER

MARCH 11, 2009
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey everybody, here's this week's LS Corvair Parts update!
First of all, thanks again for the very nice emails many of you have sent following
last week's newsletter.  I got a nice laugh from Craig Nicol's suggestion to change
out my headshot since it made me look like a hitman!  Sorry bout that - truth be
 told that pic was snapped at a wedding last summer on a hot sunny day, thus the
 sunglasses.  I don't have too many recent photos so here's an old one for now,
and I promise to get it updated asap - the hair might be a bit grayer these days,
but the smile's still there.
Our shop prep is coming along great.  Parts are still arriving and being inventoried
daily, and our rebuilding area is next on our list of projects to complete - I'm
 particularly excited about this as it will not only bring all of our parts cleaning
and rebuilding areas under 1 roof, but will also double as the future training area
for our "Corvair 101" tech sessions. So this is a huge step for us.
In the meantime, we're also staying plenty busy fulfilling your parts orders, so
 please keep us in mind for all your new, used, and NOS Corvair parts needs.
Thanks, as always, for your support, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Vairy best for over 35 years,
LARRY SHAPIRO
LS CORVAIR EZ TECH TIPS!
Here's this week's LS EZ Tech Tip...
"UNDERSTANDING THE CORVAIR FAN BELT"
*
The Corvair's unique engine design requires an equally unique fan belt that bends
from the vertical plane of the crankshaft to the horizontal plane of the fan.  Although
the Corvair developed an undeserved reputation for "throwing fan belts", this was
usually due to nothing more than the use of an incorrect belt and/or inproper tension.
 As long as the fan, idler, and generator/alternator bearings are in good shape,
 the pulleys properly aligned, and the belt tension is correct (not too tight!),
 the belt will last for years with no problems.  You can adjust fan belt tension
 at the idler pulley with a 9-16" box wrench, and checking belt tension is EZ...
*
"The Book" says belt tension should be set by a "25 lb pull".  That's great if you
happen to have a tension gauge.  Another good rule of thumb is to set belt tension
so that you can twist the belt 90 degrees in the middle of the idler-to-fan section.
 Another is to tension it so you can still turn the generator/alternator pulley
with your fingers alone. Too tight will throw the belt, too loose may slip the fan
at times...no belt is worse than a slipping belt!
JUST IN CASE...
*
In the event of a tossed fan belt, PULL OFF THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY AND TURN OFF YOUR
ENGINE!  This is because failure of the cooling fan on an air-cooled engine leads
to immediate overheating much more quickly than in a water-cooled engine - potentially
within 15 seconds at the high RPMs.
* Keep a spare fan belt, a 9-16" box wrench, and a long screwdriver or wrench (to
help set idler pulley torq) in your Corvair.  A flashlight and some paper towels
 never hurt either :)
Remember, working on your Corvair is not only fun and rewarding, but it's a lot
EZ'ier than you think.  YOU CAN DO IT!  If you have a specific question, call or
 email me anytime.  I'm always happy to help. - Larry
