taking a engine core apart, you know how one finds stuff they don't
expect, seems someone took off the smog heads, meaning the motor still
had the high top pistons in it, and bolted on stock late 95 hp heads
with a stock head gasket, and it appears the engine actually ran, in
spite of the 0.00" squish clearance. I suspect it may have been a bit
noisy, but there sure wasn't any carbon build up where the head and
piston met, and with just the heads off, it looks like there's no
serious damage ...

who'd a thunk ...

No problem---I installed smog pistons on a '65 140 HP engine--had no
problems with contact until a rebuilder decided (without telling me) to relieve the
heads--then I had a problem with power loss. The next time I had the engine
rebuilt, smog pistons were no longer available, so now I have a
low-compression head (means I can run on 1/2 89 octane and 1/2 91 octane but I (due to
age or whatever) don't try to drive with maximum foot-to-gas pedal accelaration.
