I  bet that name has been around for a while, no explanation of how it 
got  it.  The fact that crashes are  still happening vindicates its  namesake.

I lived in Arizona until '67; drove to and through Payson frequently; never  
had any problems with the roads either North or South of Payson; heard  
references to "Corvair Curve" when I stopped for coffee in Payson but never  heard 
why it was called by that name.
