Carl Edward Sagan, Ph.D. (November 9, 1934 - December 20, 1996) was an
American astronomer, astrochemist, author, and highly successful popularizer

of astronomy, astrophysics and other natural sciences. He pioneered
exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence
(SETI).

Not to mention one of NASA's primary planetary science advisors almost from
the agencies inception!

I met Dr Sagan along with Dr. Gene Shoemaker on a geological field study at
Berringer Crater, Arizona back in 1973. Neat guys with a LARGE cooler full
of Coors! Dr. Sagan was a pretty good biologist/chemist...but not so good
as a rock-whacker. Gene was just the opposite. Together, they were simply
awesome and did a LOT to shape NASA's planetary exploration hardware for a
couple of very successful decades (Pioneer 10, Voyager, Viking, et.al.)!
