Why would you want to wast a perfectly good Challenger when you can demolish
a throw away Camaro?
Actually there was many reasons they used the engineless Camaro.
Lighter for one thing, as it was pulled by a cable into the dozers.

As for real cars and real drivers.
The Original Gone in 60 seconds.
Toby Halicki did all of his driving stunts. For those who know the film,
where he hit the light pole was unscripted.
Did it on an expressway and then took off.
For most of it they didn't have any permits for shooting...............he
did that film on a wing and a prayer.
But it made him filthy rich.
In his second move "The Junkman" there were a few more unscripted
incidents..............

Halicki died filming Gone in 60 seconds 2, here in Tonawanda NY when another
stunt went horribly wrong.

He was struck by a falling power pole that was not supposed to come down
during a scene.
