Actually, there were 2 Mustangs and 2 Chargers used for filming. Both Chargers used stock 440 engines. Both Mustangs had 390 engines. One or both Mustangs had their engines modified because the Chargers would flat run away from them in stock form. Even modified, the Mustangs weren't as strong as the stock Dodges.
One Charger was destroyed in the film. One Mustang was sold to a member of the production company after filming ended. This Mustang was advertised for sale sometime in the mid-1970's. Steve McQueen reportedly inqiured about it but it had already been resold and the new owner didn't want to part with it. Last I heard this Mustang was in semi-rough, unrestored condition in a Kentucky barn and was NOT!!!!!! for sale.
