Fifty years ago today, General Motors announced that it would build a new small car called the Corvair. GM Chairman of the Board Fred Donner made the announcement at the 1959 GM Shareholder's Meeting on May 22, which was held at GM's Wilmington, Delaware Assembly Plant.
Today, exactly 50 years to the date, CORSA member Herb Brown and his 1960 500 Sedan were welcomed at the Wilmington plant by GM officials for commemorative photographs on the front lawn. Herb contacted me after seeing my article in the May Communique about the Corvair's announcement on May 22nd. Would you believe that he only lives ten miles from the plant? When events and people come together so perfectly, well, they're just meant to happen.
Herb's 1960 is a First in Class winning, 47,500 mile Delaware car that he bought from the original owner in 1978. Not only was his car perfectly suited for the occasion, but Herb was too. He retired from the Wilmington plant in '78 as an Inspector after working there for 31 years.
Joining Herb for the photographs were his wife Nancy, son Herb Jr. and First State Corvair Club members Dave Ziegler, Michael Slotwinski and Bob Gregg. Sincere thanks from the Corvair Preservation Foundation go out to General Motors and everyone who helped mark this important Corvair Anniversary date. The photos and full story will be in the July Communique!
