something,  but does not affect anything that I can see.  It's a red knob that 
looks  like it should light up if the car overheated or something to that

Before 1967, when the 4-way flashers were added as standard, there  was a 
dealer installed accessory 4-way flasher for the 65-66 models. It mounted  
vertically under the left side of the column, with the switch assembly 
sticking  up behind the dash. The bracket allowed the red plastic indicator to hang 
down  where it could be seen from the drivers seat. The plastic indicator 
was also the  actuator for the flashers. Just pull it out (or downward, 
depending on how yours  is mounted) - to activate the 4-way flashers. The wiring 
for the unit just snaps  in by disconnecting the feed wires to the steering 
column and adding the mating  connectors of the flasher in between the dash 
feed and the column wiring. There  is also a 12 volt feed wire to hook to 
the battery connector on the fuse  box.  - I have had a few of these over the 
years.
