So how well did the metallic paint that wasn't basecoat/clearcoat hold up
after 16 years in the sun?

I thought so...

Now if the Cadillac red was not metallic or pearl, then single stage would
work fine. I am not a proponent of BC/CC solid colors.

My trailer (which is a '93) was originally painted Cadillac red, with a
clearcoat. The clearcoat has taken to peeling off, leaving the base coat
exposed. Based on that and other experiences, I wouldn't paint a car with
basecoat/clearcoat.
