You are probably lucky the stalk did not come out of the switch.  I think you'd be looking for a replacement switch at that point.  Actually, they are (a year ago anyway) still available at your local FLAPS for under $20.00

    I hope you did not ruin it.  To get the knob/stem combo out of the light switch, you have to reach up behind the dash and feel for a button on top of the switch (provided the last guy put it in properly oriented).  Push that button down while pulling the knob/stem out of the switch.
