Original Delco Remy supplied distributor caps were Bakelite for the bowl type distributors made in the 1960s....I was a quality control supervisor for awhile in the "Bakelite molding department"...Inserts were aluminum or brass, depending on the customer's request. The only carbon was in the contact ball in the center tower for the rotor spring to ride on to transfer the coil energy to the rotor. 


Later, when the HEI systems were introduced, putting out over 40KV, the material was changed to an Alkyd base.
