Richmond, VA has a Belgian Block road, Monument Avenue. (City of the
Monuments)

The Corvair sounds good driving over it.

Several monuments have circles around them, and until recently, traffic
circle rules did not apply. Monument Ave had right of way, even over cars
in the circle that entered from the side street (regular intersection
rules).

Also, cars traveling on Monument Ave would proceed around the monuments at
~35 mph in dry weather, dripping oil onto the Belgian Blocks. The when it
started to rain, this became a very slippery surface.

Many times I would be going around the Robert E Lee monument (largest
circle in the group), at the beginning of rain, and being two travel lanes
on Monumnet Ave and around the monuments, the car beside me would be doing
360s!!!

The city finally took down the fancy wrought iron fencing because they
tired of replacing so many sections from spinning cars.

Another trivia item, as if you wanted more, in the late 60s the city
proceeded to pave over the Belgian Blocks to smooth the noisy street.
Citizens complained and Mrs. Taylor laid down in the street in front of the
paving crew and refused to get out of their way. Debates went on for
several months, and the Belgian Blocks remain to this day.

Most city streets are full of potholes, especially in the spring, and the
city just dumps lumps of soft asphalt over the holes, making the street
like the GM Washboard Test Track (or it is called the Belgian Block
Road?)...Bill Hershkowitz 69 Monza Coupe 110 PG
