No, not a label to indicate what gear a stick shift is in, but a label 
to indicate what gears are available and where they are located relative 
to one another.  Even Smitty, clearly brighter than we NJ folks, 
probably has had occasion to get into an unfamiliar vehicle and glance 
at a shift pattern to see "what it's got."
