To add to what Frank said, you can also twist the plunger shaft back and  
forth while lightly pulling on it to seat the contact.  Both my current  
'68's  and a long gone '66 convertible's door jamb switches have been  defeated 
in the past by corrosion.  Twisting the shaft while it is pulled  out will 
clean up light corrosion and restore the connection.  Sometimes  you have to 
remove the switch with a suitable wrench (holding the push shaft so  the 
wires don't twist inside) to be sure things are clean as well as renewing  the 
metal-to-metal connection between the switch threads and the hole in the  
body.
