Oh man J.R. , you just brought back the memories of the same situation with a 1967 Chevy Van 90 I drove.  

Still kinda miss that beast though,  90 inch wheel base was cool.

That was exactly my approach on a Maverick - installed a floor shift, looked 
cool, problem solved.  No more blocking traffic at a red light (turned 
green) to lift the hood and realign the column shifter.

No wonder JC Whitless sold so many floor shifter kits. Let's throw in
new parts instead of fixing the old. Especially since the new parts look
cool. BTW, the floor shifter kits also wore out and did the same thing.
