<VV> Concours-

Bob,

So now you are a Psychic? Or maybe an empath? You are either a very poor one or you have chosen to discount the fact that at least TWO members are already very upset about this. But then, Mark and I must be just a couple of wack jobs who don't count, right?

I take the decision to rename the Modified class to "improved" as a personal slap in the face for everything I have ever done to try to promote the Stock Corvair. It was bad enough to have to fight to get recognition from CORSA every year for my insane attempts to restore a "plain Jane" '64 sedan to Factory Stock; now I am told the car would have been "improved" had I just left it a rusting modified hulk.

Am I the only one who feels this slight? Maybe so, but there are not too many of us who have bothered to go down this road, and I would ask all of you objecting to my offense to remember that. Yes, many of you have restored a Corvair (or two or more); not many of you have gone "all the way" to restore a Stock Corvair, and almost nobody who did it to a sedan. So yes, I am really "out there" in left field, and yes, I am REALLY offended that my club seems to have so little regard for the effort and for the effect this word has.

I have owned and driven Corvairs for nearly 40 years, and have been a member of CORSA since 1979 (with a brief lapse in the late 80s/early 90s). I practically live, eat, and breathe Corvairs when I am "in the zone", and I have many friends and fond memories from my association with this organization. There have been times before when I have been upset or even angry (cancellation of St Louis Concours comes to mind) but I eventually shook it off as I came to realize it wasn't personal.

This, however, feels different. It IS personal. I LOVE my stock Corvair the way most of you love your race cars or whatever Corvair you drive. But I am OFFENDED by the implication, now official CORSA concours policy, that my car is somehow less of a Corvair because it is not "improved". The word truly bothers me. Don't tell me that is doesn't, or that it shouldn't.

I have decided I will NOT be attending the convention this year. It would have been a hassle to go anyway, as I cannot get more than a couple of the days off work so I would be forced to fly there and back at considerable expense for only a couple of days. I wanted to do it anyway, if only to attend the Stock Corvair event. Now, I just don't care anymore.

I'm done. If I say anymore I will surely regret it. I need a break from all of this.

CORSA has always favored other applications of the car over promoting or preserving Stock, and I never had a big problem with that until they decided to start promoting everything else at the EXPENSE of stock, which is implied by claiming that all car which are not stock are "improved".

Now, I happen to think that encouraging the preservation of stock
Corvairs is a great idea, and that we as an organization could do more
to facilitate this. But the statement above is the biggest piece of
hooey I have ever read on VV. It is mind-bogglingly "out there."

The crux of the argument is that the use of the word "improved" will
somehow sap the spirit of those with enthusiasm for cars in stock
configuration, AND that the use of the word "improved" is evidence of a
far-reaching plan to squash enthusiasm for cars in stock configuration.
Wow.
