One additional point in favor of using the emergency/parking brake on cars
newer than our Corvairs with rear drum brakes is that the parking brake
activates the self adjusting mechanism. Backing up and stopping short does
it as well, but owner's manuals of many '80s and early '90s era cars with
disc/drum brakes advise using the parking brake to help keep the rear drums
adjusted.

And I use the parking brake and leave my manual Corvairs in gear when I
park. Had one move downhill on me once--one compression stroke at a time.
It looked like it had hiccups.
