I just watched a Myth Buster's show where they tested several mythical gas saving devices. Of course, none of them worked (magnets, vortex things, etc.). The addition of acetone (the ingredient in many additives) actually reduced mileage significantly. They were also not able to get a homemade hydrogen generator to work. They were able to get an engine to run by feeding hydrogen through the carburetor until it flashed back on them. The infamous 300 mpg carburetor actually only got about 15 mpg on a car that was getting 25 before they swapped out the GM 2 BBL. They reported than only about 4% of all devices ever tried have actually worked and the best was about a 7% increase. Oh well.
