<VV> Irregular idle

Friends,
I'm about half-embarrassed asking this question, but there might be
different answers so please humor me. My 63 Monza 900 3-speed is
plagued with an inconsistent idle after warmup, varying between a very
fast idle (~1500 RPM) and a near-stall at about 600 rpm. All the
accelerator linkages and the actuator rod between the carbs are
operating freely and they come back to a solid stop when I release the
accelerator. This happens well after the carbs are off the fast-idle
cam. You can goose the throttle when it's idling at 1500 rpm, and
sometimes it settles down to the 600 rpm idle, sometimes not. Lately,
after a period of driving in traffic, it almost always settles to the
1500 rpm mode when I come to a stop.
This is not a new problem. I've experienced the same thing for all 17
years I've had the car!
I've overhauled the carbs half a dozen times over the years, last
time probably 2006 or 2007. It might be worth noting that the car
doesn't get driven much lately since my daughter is off to college,
and has been sitting in the garage from the end of August until
yesterday when I fired it up again to get some fresh gas in the tank.
Maybe it's time for another carb rebuild?
I suppose one obvious target would be contamination in the idle
passages, but there might be some other places to look. Suggestions
are most welcome!

Thanks in advance,
Chuck McKinley
