Tony:  You are correct, but that is a different discussion than the original
posting.

In fact, Ludvigsen suggest the idea in the article reprinted in the
Communique.  (You have that issue, don't you?)  Porsche had several
developmental engines projects going on when the Corvair was introduced.  It
was no big secret then that Chevy R&D had stuffed a prototype Corvair engine
into the back of a 356 coupe for testing purposes.

Whatever the cause(s) or inspiration(s), the resulting 6 cyl engine in the
911 has to be placed right up there with the SB Chevy as one of the all time
great engine designs.

Not exactly... there's evidence that Porsche may have taken a close look at
the boxer-6 that GM put in that 356, which fit nicely and ran well and made
Porsche sit up and realize that they had no 6 cylinder engine of their
own... but a few years later they did.

One could in fact suggest that the Corvair was partially responsible for the
911.
