OK, how about this ?

Simply bevel the end of the barrel so the it acts like its own 'ring 
compressor' ?

So, whichever way you install it, slip the piston into the 'inner' end of 
the barrel and the rings are compressed by the beveled edge ?

OK, start picking this one apart !

I bought my tapered ring Corvair specific compressor from Ray Sedman.
I also have the "official"  Kent- Moore  demountable compressor for
those" jug on engine" replacements.
