You are in your 110 monza coupe in a 5 mile race with a AA/FD. You spot the Dragster 2 & 1/2 miles. When you hit the 2 & 1/2 mile marker at 92 mph [near top speed of a stock 'Vair] , the Dragster is gone in a puff of smoke and a deafening roar. 2 min. later you are turning your engine off, as the Queen is walking over to hand you the winners trophy. The dragster is sitting 200 ft. short of the finish line.
The fastest car does not always win the race........ [I like this scenario much better the the Acceleration/no 'vair].

Subject: <VV> ACCELERATION--(Still No Corvair)

Okay - Now the purist in me wants to know - Now Top Fuelers and Funny cars
are no longer running a quarter mile. For safety reasons, NHRA shortened
the distance to 1000 ft. So, would the Fueler still catch the Corvette in
the 1000 feet that they have available?

The answer? NO, it wouldn't! - The vette would reach 1000 feet in 3.4129
seconds (200MPH=293 fps)

The current AA/FD record is 3.771 seconds - for the 1000 ft distance.

Of course, a blink later the dragster roars past the Corvette!	Still
very impressive, though!

>From the original quote:

Putting all of this into perspective:

You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter 'twin-turbo' powered
Corvette Z06. Over a mile up the road, a top fuel dragster is staged and
ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the
of a flying start. You run the 'Vette hard up through the gears and
across the starting line and pass the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The
'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment.

The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down
but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and
within 3 seconds, the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to
finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him.

Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200
mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he
you within a mere 1,320 foot long race course.

...... and that my friend, is ACCELERATION!
