 Not sure there's a difference, but in this case, it means boring all the main bearing bores to the correct diameter AND all in line with each other. 

I inadvertently got a set of Clevite 77s ages ago which were 0.020" oversize. Didn't realize it immediately, couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the case to clamp together at first!

Perhaps not as common in the Corvair, where cases are still plentiful, 

and they are not serial number matched to the chassis, but in some 

marques, some owners find it quite common to "need" to "save" a 

particular case.  Also can make getting, then fitting, the "right" 

bearings a notable challenge.



And, a question -- is it line-bored, or is it align-bored?  Does it make 

a difference?
