Thanks for comments.  Oil cooler lid is installed.  How do you tell the
difference in distributors?

Hi Bill,

You should check and see which engine you have exactly, and if the
distributor is correct for the engine.  18 degrees initial sounds like a lot
to me too.  Perhaps a TDC check is in order too?

As for #2 having the problem, detonation can be the result of overheating.
Make sure you have the cover for the oil cooler installed, if not that is
most likely your cause.
